SALTO in Georgia: Survey the Opening, Then Pick the Platform
SALTO projects go wrong when the platform is chosen first and the doors are measured afterward. SALTO’s real strength is hardware breadth — mortise locks, cylinders, padlocks, lockers, panic devices, rack doors — and a proper opening-by-opening survey usually settles the platform argument before anyone has to have it.
The three platforms, briefly
Salto Space is the on-premises platform built on SVN data-on-card, where access rights ride on the credential and the credential carries updates around the building as people move through it. Salto KS is the cloud service, where IQ gateways link the lock network to the internet, typically one per floor or zone and up to sixteen doors per gateway. Homelok is the cloud platform aimed at residential property. The survey below usually tells you which of the three fits.
Doors where you can change hardware
Standard mortise and cylindrical latch openings take the XS4 escutcheon families — XS4 One and the XS4 One S series, or XS4 Mini where a smaller footprint suits the door. These are wire-free at the opening, which is what makes SALTO practical in buildings where core drilling and cable pathways are expensive, disruptive or simply not permitted.
Doors you cannot re-bore
Savannah’s historic district, and older buildings in Athens and downtown Macon, routinely have doors nobody will let you modify. The Neo Cylinder answers that: it replaces the mortise cylinder alone, supports SVN-Flex so credentials update the cylinder in the field, works with BLUEnet wireless, and takes battery replacement without removing the cylinder from the door. It is also the honest option under a lease that forbids altering the door leaf.
Openings that are not doors
- Gates, cages, switchgear and equipment yards — electronic padlocks rather than a wired reader and strike
- Staff lockers and storage — electronic locker locks on the same credential as the building
- Egress doors with panic hardware — XS4 panic bar hardware instead of retrofitting a lock onto a fire exit
- Server racks — a swing handle cylinder brings cabinet-level access into the same system, which matters in the data center corridor where rack access has to be logged, not assumed
- Main entrances, elevators and high-traffic openings — wall readers and wired access controllers, where wired control is still the correct answer
Wireless coverage is a survey item, not an assumption
BLUEnet wireless and gateway placement have to be planned against the building rather than the floor plan’s optimism. Concrete cores, elevator shafts, cold storage, tilt-wall construction and long parking decks all cut range. Repeaters need power and a mounting location that will still be reachable in five years, when the ceiling above it has become somebody’s storage.
Georgia conditions on exterior hardware
Humidity here is constant, coastal sites add salt air, and battery-powered electronic hardware outdoors fails first at gaskets and battery contacts. Specify enclosure and finish for the actual exposure, keep a battery replacement schedule instead of waiting for low-battery events to arrive one at a time, and plan mechanical override on the openings where a dead battery cannot be tolerated. That last decision belongs in the survey, not in a service call.
Turnover-driven properties
Athens student housing and Atlanta multifamily turn over an entire population on a calendar. Homelok and KS both address that with digital keys that expire on their own, which removes the annual scramble of collecting, recoding and reissuing fobs. Hospitality runs the same pattern at a much shorter interval, and film and television production stages run it shorter still.
