The Whole Job Is Graded on Monday Morning
Nobody remembers how a hardware deployment was planned. They remember whether people could work when they came in. That single fact should drive every decision on an equipment installation, and it is why the work that determines success happens before anything is unboxed.
Before the Truck Arrives
Equipment is staged and configured off site wherever it can be, so the on-site window is spent installing rather than troubleshooting a factory default. Every unit is inventoried first, with serial, model, address and intended location captured while it is still on a bench and readable. Configurations from the gear being replaced are backed up and kept, because the fastest rollback is the one you already have a file for. Each system gets a written rollback point and a person who owns the decision to use it. Labels go on before the move, not after, when three identical switches are on the floor of a telecom room and nobody is certain which is which.
The Cutover Window
Order is determined by dependency, not by what is easiest to lift. Core first, then distribution, then edge, then the services everything authenticates against, then endpoints. Each stage gets a verification checkpoint before the next one starts, and there is a stated go or no-go before the point where rolling back stops being cheap. Building constraints are part of the plan: an Atlanta tower gives you a freight elevator reservation and a dock window, both shorter than you would like, and a clinical building in Augusta gives you the hours between the last patient and the first one.
Power, Heat and Georgia Weather
Georgia summers produce short outages and voltage sags far more often than long blackouts. That changes what a UPS is for. It is sized to ride through a sag and to shut equipment down cleanly, or to carry the load until a generator picks it up, not to run an office through a storm. On the coastal plain, hurricane exposure changes the calculation again, and the real question becomes which panel the equipment is on and how the transfer switch behaves, because runtime numbers mean nothing if the network rack is not on the backed-up side. Surge protection is a separate item from the UPS and belongs at the service and at the rack.
Heat and dust are the other half. Telecom closets in older Georgia buildings and on plant floors through Macon and Columbus run hot, and a switch that pulls plant dust through itself for two years fails in a way that looks random. Sealed cabinets with filtered fans, temperature monitoring, and an honest number for the ambient the space actually reaches in August are worth more than another year of warranty.
Racked So It Can Be Serviced
Front to back airflow respected, blanking panels in the empty spaces rather than left open, cable management with service loops that let a unit slide out without unplugging its neighbor, redundant power supplies fed from separate distribution, weight low in the rack, and nothing installed across the path of a hot-swap component. It takes an extra hour during installation and saves hours on every future service call.
Wireless Is Not a Hardware Install
Access point placement is a design output. Mounting one where the cable happened to land, or above a hard lid because the ceiling looked tidy, produces coverage nobody can explain later. Placement comes from the design, the drop is Category 6A, and the work ends with a validation walk that measures what was actually built against what was intended.
