Mounting a Camera Is Easy. Producing Evidence Is Not.
Most camera systems that disappoint were installed competently. The cameras are level, the cable is neat, the recorder is online. They disappoint because nobody decided in advance what each camera had to prove, or what the Georgia environment was going to do to it.
What Actually Takes Cameras Down Here
Induced surge. Georgia’s thunderstorm season kills far more cameras through induced voltage than through direct strikes. Anything on a pole, a roof, a canopy, or a copper run between buildings needs surge protection at both ends and a real ground, not a lug on a painted post. On larger sites the cleaner answer is to remove the copper path entirely and run the link on fiber.
Condensation. A dome opened and resealed on a humid Georgia afternoon traps that air inside. The first cool night fogs the bubble from the inside and the picture is gone until someone climbs back up. Fresh desiccant, gaskets seated properly, sun shields, and a mounting position that is not aimed into afternoon sun all matter more than the sensor specification.
Insects and webs. Infrared illuminators draw insects, and one spider working across a lens generates motion events all night until people stop trusting the alerts. Where the hardware allows separating the illuminator from the lens, do it, and plan on an outdoor cleaning cycle instead of pretending there is not one.
Design the Scene, Not the Mounting Point
An overview camera does not read license plates, no matter how many megapixels it has. A truck gate at a distribution site behind the Port of Savannah needs a dedicated plate camera with a narrow field of view, a shallow approach angle, a shutter fast enough to freeze a moving tractor unit, and dedicated illumination, because a fast shutter throws away light. That is four decisions, and the overview camera on the same pole is a separate device doing a separate job.
The same logic applies to a dock door facing low afternoon sun, to a warehouse aisle where mounting height flattens everything into a hard hat viewed from above, and to a production lot in metro Atlanta where the fence line matters more than the interior. In medical settings around Augusta, part of the design is what the camera is not allowed to see, which means privacy masking is decided with the facility before installation rather than after a complaint.
Retention Is a Budget Number, Not a Feature
Storage follows from resolution, frame rate, compression, whether you record continuously or on motion, and how many days you have to keep. Thirty days and sixty days are very different purchases. Warehouse and logistics operators usually want the longer window because claims arrive late. Getting this number right up front is cheaper than discovering the recorder overwrote the week you needed.
Keep Cameras Off the Business Network
Cameras are embedded devices with long lives and uneven firmware histories. They belong on their own VLAN, with default credentials gone, a firmware plan that someone owns, and no route to the business network except through the recording platform. The PoE switch feeding them needs headroom for the actual power draw with heaters and illuminators running, and it needs to be on backup power, or the whole system goes dark during exactly the kind of Georgia summer outage you wanted it for.
