HID Access Control for Georgia Facilities: the Credential Decision Comes First
Nearly every problem an HID project runs into later is settled in the first hour, when someone picks the credential. HID, a brand of ASSA ABLOY, sells hardware spanning three decades of card technology, and a reader that fits your door frame will not necessarily read the badge already in your employees’ wallets. KSEDCO works that decision first, because it sets the reader model, the wiring method, the panel and how much of the existing system survives.
125 kHz prox or 13.56 MHz smart credentials
Legacy HID Prox operates at 125 kHz and carries no meaningful cryptography. The 13.56 MHz families — iCLASS SE, iCLASS SR and Seos — use mutual authentication and encrypted data, and Seos is the credential technology behind HID mobile access. When a site is holding onto prox because reissuing badges is disruptive, the practical middle path is a reader that handles both.
HID Signo readers cover Seos, iCLASS SE, iCLASS SR, iCLASS, MIFARE Classic, MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2 and EV3, and ISO 14443A cards. A building can run old and new credentials through the same reader for the length of a reissue period, then retire the legacy format once the last badge is turned in.
Wiegand or OSDP on the reader run
The second decision is the wire itself. Wiegand is unsupervised and unencrypted: cut the cable and nothing reports it. OSDP over two-wire RS-485 is supervised, encrypted when Secure Channel is enabled, and lets a reader be configured from the panel instead of at the door. Signo and iCLASS SE readers can be set for either. HID states that its Signo readers and its Aero and Mercury controller lines carry the Security Industry Association’s OSDP Verified mark.
Which one you need varies by building. In the data center corridor, and in secured government and financial space, supervision and tamper reporting on the reader run are usually not optional. In a small tenant suite they may be. Deciding before rough-in avoids pulling cable twice.
Base-building formats in Cumberland and Perimeter
Tenant fit-outs in the towers along Cumberland Parkway and around Perimeter rarely start clean. Lobby turnstiles, parking gates and elevator readers belong to the property owner, and the card format and facility code are already fixed. Before ordering a single credential for a suite, confirm with building management which format the base building issues, whether the owner encodes tenant cards, and what the elevator interface expects. Getting that wrong means employees carry two badges for the life of the lease.
Mobile, visitor and identity software
HID Mobile Access issues Seos-based credentials to phones over Bluetooth and NFC, which changes onboarding more than it changes the door: credentials are granted and revoked in software rather than handed across a desk. On the visitor side, EasyLobby Secure Visitor Management is HID’s on-premises package for ID scanning, record creation, badge printing, check-in and watch-list screening. HID SAFE addresses wider identity management, where physical credentials have to reconcile with employment records.
How we run an HID job
- Read the installed credentials and document format, facility code and bit length before quoting anything
- Survey each opening for lock type, egress device and door position monitoring
- Specify readers and controllers against the two decisions above rather than against a catalog page
- Terminate, address and test the reader bus, then commission schedules, permissions and door timing
- Hand over documentation, and service the system afterward
