Openpath Is Now Avigilon Alta: How a Georgia Deployment Gets Sequenced

Start with the name, because it causes real confusion on quotes. Motorola Solutions acquired Openpath in 2021, and in 2023 the line was rebranded as Avigilon Alta Access. Hardware bought as Openpath still runs, but current portals, firmware notes and datasheets use the Alta name. When a part number turns up nothing in a search, that is usually why.

What follows is the order this work actually happens in. Jumping ahead is where schedules slip.

1. Tenant and network, before any hardware ships

The cloud tenant gets created under the customer’s own domain and ownership, with admin roles assigned to named people. Decide whether users will sync from an identity provider or be entered by hand, and agree the network path: outbound connectivity for the controller, a switch port with PoE budget, and a place in a secured IDF for the enclosure. Creating the tenant in the customer’s name rather than the integrator’s is the item most often corrected later at cost.

2. Openings and rough-in

Each opening gets decided before cable is pulled: lock type, fail-safe or fail-secure behavior, request-to-exit device, door position monitoring, and whether the reader lands on a metal frame, a glass door or a narrow mullion. Readers home-run back to the controller. Mounting surface is a commissioning variable, not a detail — Bluetooth range behaves differently on a steel mullion than on drywall, and it is cheaper to find that out during rough-in.

3. Credentials and unlock method

Alta readers use the patented Triple Unlock approach, working Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular paths together rather than waiting on a single radio. Users can wave to unlock hands-free, use the phone or watch app, or present high-frequency and low.

Georgia conditions that change the sequence

Film and television production stages rotate crews weekly and sometimes faster. Time-boxed credentials and guest links do more work there than plastic ever did, and the handover conversation is about who can issue and revoke access at eleven at night, not about reader finishes.

Around Hartsfield-Jackson, dock and driver doors run around the clock. There is no quiet Saturday, so cutover windows are narrow and the sequence above has to be planned to leave every opening in a working state at the end of each shift rather than at the end of the project.

In Cumberland and Perimeter towers, lobby, elevator and garage control belong to the property owner. Tenant scope has to be drawn precisely at the suite line, and the credential format has to match whatever the base building already issues.
