Cloud video almost never fails because of the software. It fails because of the uplink, or because nobody decided in advance who was allowed to see what. Below is the order KSEDCO works a deployment, and the reason each step sits where it does.
First, measure the upload at the worst hour
Cloud recording pushes video out of the building continuously. A branch in Macon on a business cable circuit behaves very differently at four in the afternoon than it did during a quiet Saturday site survey, because the same circuit is carrying card processing, phones, guest Wi-Fi and overnight backups. Measure sustained upload during the site’s busiest window, then size stream count and bitrate against what is genuinely left over, not against the number printed on the service agreement.
Then split retention between the edge and the cloud
Summer storms take circuits down across the state every year, and a coastal-plain site can lose service for a good deal longer than an afternoon. Cameras or a gateway that buffer locally will backfill once the link returns. Equipment that does not buffer simply loses that window, permanently. Decide up front how many days must survive on site, how many must survive in the cloud, and which of the two an investigator or a claims adjuster is actually going to be shown.
Decide what the gateway sits on
The on-site appliance needs conditioned power, a switch port that is not shared with a printer, and somewhere it will not cook. In a Cumberland or Perimeter tenant suite that usually means the IDF closet, on the UPS, alongside the camera switch. In a distribution building off I-16 it means an enclosure rated for the humidity and dust it will really live in, with surge protection on every run that leaves the building shell.
Build the role map before you create any users
Cloud platforms make it trivially easy to hand a district manager every camera in the state. Write down who sees which sites, who may export, who may change camera settings, and who may add or remove users. Then create accounts against that list. A property management group holding buildings in Atlanta, Athens and Savannah needs per-property roles, not one company-wide login passed around by text message. Get this wrong and the cleanup happens after an incident, which is the worst possible time.
Cut over one site completely, then repeat
Prove the design on a single building before ordering for twenty. Bandwidth under real load, retention actually achieved, an export performed by the client’s own staff rather than by a technician, alerts landing on the phones that will be carrying them at two in the morning. Rollouts that skip this step tend to reach the twelfth site before anyone notices the retention was never what the proposal said.
Where a hybrid design earns its place
Heavy camera counts, long retention and strict evidence requirements usually stay on-premises. Small branches, remodels, construction trailers and short-lease sites go to the cloud and report into the same organization.
