Choosing the fiber, not just pulling it

Two decisions set both the cost and the useful life of a fiber run. The first is fiber type. Multimode is common for shorter runs inside a building where the optics are already matched to it; single-mode costs little more per foot in place and removes the distance ceiling, which matters when the same pathway will still be in use several equipment generations from now. The second is strand count, and it is where owners most often under-buy. Adding strands during the original pull is inexpensive. Pulling a second cable through the same congested pathway two years later is not.

Glass is dielectric, so a fiber link gives a lightning-induced surge no conductive route from one structure into the next, which is exactly the damage path that copper between separate buildings opens up. Humidity is the second factor: outside plant, and anything routed through an unconditioned warehouse or mezzanine, has to be specified for the conditions it will really sit in rather than the conditions in the server room.

Testing and closeout

Every strand is tested for insertion loss against the application it is intended to support, longer and spliced runs receive OTDR traces, and the results are handed over with panel labeling and a strand assignment schedule. That record is what turns the next expansion into a straightforward job instead of an investigation.
