A camera rollout is a sequence, and the order is not obvious
Verkada cameras record onto the camera and stream to the cloud on request. That one design decision reorders the whole project. There is no recorder to size, rack, cool or replace, so the questions that used to dominate a video job disappear and two others take their place: how many days of retention does each area actually need, and can the site uplink carry the review traffic an incident generates.
First, price retention area by area
On-camera storage is finite and varies by model, which makes retention a hardware decision rather than a license checkbox. A cash office, a controlled-substance room, or a dock door where claims surface weeks later needs a longer window than a corridor. Pricing every camera on site to the longest requirement is the most common way these projects get expensive for no good reason. We set retention area by area and let camera selection follow it.
Then the network, before a single mount goes up
Upload demand is modest but bursty. It spikes when several people review footage at once, which is what happens during the incident you bought the system for. We measure the real circuit rather than trusting the number on the bill, confirm PoE budget and switch capacity, and put cameras on their own VLAN. In Georgia this is also where UPS sizing gets decided, because summer storms drop power for minutes at a time and a camera behind an unbacked switch is dark during the event.
Then cameras, in areas you can hand over
We commission complete areas rather than sprinkling cameras across a property, so each zone is finished, tested and usable before the next starts. That lets the work move around shift changes at a live site: a distribution building on I-16 behind the Port of Savannah, a plant in Macon on I-75, or a manufacturer in Columbus on I-185 cannot stop for a camera crew.
Then tuning, which is where the value sits
Search, alerting and analytics only earn their keep once somebody sets them up. Line-crossing and motion alerts belong where they mean something, tamper alerts belong on exposed cameras, and permissions have to be decided rather than left to drift. Cloud video makes access easy to grant, which is precisely why who sees what should be settled at handover.

Production stages around metro Atlanta are the clearest example. Coverage has to protect equipment and controlled areas while staying off the working set, and the layout changes between productions, so mounts and cable routes must tolerate being moved. Choosing the camera bodies

Verkada cameras: what the hybrid design actually means
Verkada cameras record onto the camera itself and stream to the cloud when somebody asks for footage. That detail matters more than any spec on the datasheet: there is no recorder in a cupboard to fail or be stolen, and the site is not uploading every camera continuously, so the internet connection stays usable during the working day.
If the network drops, the cameras keep recording locally and catch up afterwards. That is the failure mode you want, and it is the opposite of a pure-cloud camera that stops when the line does.
What we check before quoting
- Retention. On-camera storage is finite and varies by model — 30, 60 or 90 days changes which camera you need, not just which license.
- Upload capacity. Modest, but not zero. We measure the actual line rather than trusting the number on the bill.
- License term. Cameras are licensed for a period. Budget it as an operating cost.
- Who gets to look. Verkada is easy to give people access to, which is exactly why the permission structure should be decided deliberately at handover.
