PDK Touch and pdk.io: What Actually Fails in the Field

ProdataKey builds a cloud-managed access control system. The pdk.io platform handles administration, the Cloud Node is the on-site gateway that talks to the door controllers, and Touch readers use Bluetooth Low Energy so a user can leave the phone in a pocket and touch the reader to show intent. The Red line is the higher-security hardware in the family, with a Red Reader V2 added in 2026.

None of that is where these systems get interesting. Service calls are, and in Georgia they cluster into a short list worth understanding before you buy.

The internet drops

The Cloud Node holds site data locally, so doors keep reading credentials and schedules keep running when the connection is gone. What stops is anything that needs the cloud: issuing a new credential, unlocking a door remotely, and live notifications. That is worth knowing before a storm rather than during one. Deciding in advance who carries a physical credential when the network is down is a five-minute conversation that prevents a bad afternoon.

Storms, surge and grounding

Georgia gets frequent summer thunderstorms, and the coastal plain adds hurricane exposure on top of that. Access control fails in this weather in ordinary ways: induced surge on long exterior reader runs and gate loops, a power supply that never comes back, a switch that recovers while the internet equipment does not.

Surge protection belongs on exterior runs and at the panel. Grounding needs to be a single point rather than several competing ones. And UPS sizing should cover the panel, the network switch and the internet equipment together — a UPS that holds the controller up while the switch sits dark buys nothing at all.

Humidity and unconditioned space

Distribution buildings along I-16 and I-95 behind the Savannah port, and much of the dock space around Atlanta, are unconditioned. Condensation forms inside enclosures rated for a clean office. Exterior readers need the right enclosure rating and a drip loop, gaskets need to be intact rather than approximately intact, and conduit entering a warm building from outside will carry moisture in with it unless it is sealed.

Bluetooth behaves like radio, not like a wire

Touch read behavior changes with what the reader is mounted on. A steel frame or a narrow mullion, a thick phone case, or two readers mounted back to back across a vestibule will each change how the door feels to a user. These are commissioning problems rather than defects, and they cost far less to solve at mounting time than after a few hundred people have formed an opinion about the system.

Usually it is the door, not the electronics

Most access control service calls are mechanical. Strikes wear, closers drift out of adjustment, magnetic locks lose alignment, and door position switches fall out of tolerance until a closed door reports itself propped. A service plan that only covers software and credentials will keep sending someone to look at the wrong thing.

Account hygiene, which nobody schedules

  • Owner-level accounts held by the customer, not only by whoever installed the system
  • Mobile credentials revoked the day someone leaves, not at the next audit
  • Schedules and holiday tables reviewed annually instead of inherited indefinitely
  • A current door schedule on file so the next technician is not guessing at panel wiring
  • Battery replacement dates recorded for the panel and any wireless hardware
