Specifying ZKTeco Access Control and Biometrics for Georgia Sites

Two decisions drive a ZKTeco job more than any others: how far from the door or gate the credential has to be read, and what the buyer’s contract says about where hardware may be sourced. Settle those two and the rest of the bill of materials falls out of them. Get either wrong and you are re-pulling cable or losing the submittal.

Read range is a survey decision, not a catalog pick

ZKTeco’s long-range UHF line is organized around a few range classes. The ZLR-UHF-12 is an outdoor, IP66-rated 900 MHz reader rated at roughly 40 feet. The FLR-UHF-30 is rated at about 100 feet and the FLR-UHF-60 at about 200 feet. Those are catalog figures measured under favorable conditions. The number you actually need comes from standing at the gate with a tape measure and watching how vehicles arrive.

Ask where the vehicle has to be when the gate starts moving. At a freight yard on the Hartsfield-Jackson perimeter, a tractor-trailer that stops, waits for a barrier arm and then pulls forward creates a queue that backs onto the access road. Reading the tag 100 feet out so the arm is already clear is a throughput decision, not a security one. At a fenced contractor yard seeing one truck an hour, the 40-foot reader is the correct answer and the cheaper one.

Over-ranging is the failure nobody plans for. A reader that reaches 200 feet will happily open a gate for a windshield tag in the next lane, in the visitor lot, or parked against the fence overnight. Aiming, shielding and reducing power during commissioning are part of the install, not an afterthought.

ZKTeco also builds long-distance units such as the U1000 and U2000 that combine the UHF reader and the controller in one enclosure, with TCP/IP, Wiegand in and out, relay outputs, and door sensor and exit button inputs. That matters when the gate sits far from the nearest panel room and nobody wants to trench a second conduit run. Gate and vehicle access layouts usually resolve this question first.

Sourcing review belongs in the submittal, not the punch list

Section 889 of the FY2019 NDAA names five specific companies, Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision and Dahua, and ZKTeco is not among them. That is a narrower test than most buyers assume, and it is not the only one in play. Federal work, defense-adjacent contracts, university systems and large private owners frequently layer on country-of-origin language, supplier questionnaires, or an approved-vendor list stricter than the statute.

Around Fort Gordon in Augusta, and on the cyber and medical campuses near it, the clause set in the contract decides the hardware before the data sheet does. Read the clauses, confirm the specific model and its country of manufacture with the distributor in writing, and put that documentation in the submittal package. Doing it afterward means re-specifying with conduit already in the ground. Government and institutional projects live or die on this step.

What Georgia humidity does to biometric readers

ZKTeco’s biometric range covers fingerprint, face, finger vein, palm and iris. On a Georgia site the choice usually comes down to where the reader lives. A fingerprint sensor on a loading dock, gatehouse or parking deck deals with wet fingers in July, condensation on the platen where conditioned air meets outside air, and gloves in January. Face readers sidestep all of that but introduce a lighting problem at a glass lobby where the morning sun sits behind everyone walking in.

Whichever you choose, enroll carefully, keep a second credential type active for every user, and agree on the fallback before the day you need it.

  • Credential format and bit length documented, with spare tags on the shelf
  • Surge protection and grounding proven on every run that leaves a building
  • Administrator accounts, software licensing and firmware versions in the owner’s name
