The controller layout is the decision that sets the price

Most Verkada access control quotes are decided by one question that has nothing to do with software: how do your doors group behind electrical rooms? Twenty openings served by two closets and twenty openings scattered across four floors of a Cumberland office tower are the same door count and two very different jobs. We settle that first, because it drives controller selection, cable footage, and how many ceiling access panels the building manager has to approve.

How the controllers divide up

Verkada builds cloud-managed controllers in tiers. The AC12 handles a single door on one PoE run and passes power through to the peripherals at that opening. Larger units cover four doors and sixteen doors for a main closet. The AX11 is the input and output controller, with sixteen inputs and sixteen outputs for panic buttons, strobes, gate contacts and elevator dispatch. The one-door unit is what makes an isolated opening affordable to bring onto the system: a roof hatch, a lone IDF, a suite door added after the fit-out, none of which justify a home run back to a distant panel.

Tenant suites and shared cores

In Perimeter and Cumberland towers the boundary that matters is contractual, not technical. The base building system belongs to the landlord; your suite doors and the elevator dispatch for your floors do not. We map that line before design, so your credentials, your audit trail and your after-hours rules stay in your own account, and the landlord interface becomes a defined handoff instead of a surprise at commissioning.

Keeping the readers you already have

Verkada supports low- and high-frequency credentials alongside mobile credentials, so a retrofit does not have to replace every reader and reissue every badge on day one. In a working Augusta medical building or a plant in Macon, that matters more than any feature on the sheet. You change the head end, run existing badges through a transition window, then swap readers by wing or by floor on a schedule the operation can absorb. Where a site genuinely should move off a legacy credential format, we say so and price the reissue openly rather than burying it in a later change order.

What Georgia conditions do to a door

Two site conditions change the electrical design here more than anything in a datasheet. The first is the summer storm season. Any reader, exit device or gate contact run that leaves the building envelope, crosses a courtyard, or reaches a detached guard house is an induced-surge path. It needs surge suppression and a single-point ground that was tested, not assumed. The second is humidity. Exterior readers and any enclosure on a loading dock or a stage door need a rating that expects condensation to form inside the box, with gaskets seated and a drainage path that works.

Outage behavior is the third. Verkada controllers keep making local door decisions when the internet drops, so the failure that actually locks people out is loss of power at the opening, not loss of cloud. We size the door power supply and its battery to the real load, magnetic locks included, and we prove it by pulling the breaker rather than by reading a label.

What you hold when we leave

  • A door schedule naming every opening, its controller port, its lock type, and whether it is fail-safe or fail-secure.
  • Fire alarm interface test results for every opening where release on alarm is required.
  • The credential and guest pass process in writing, including how a departing employee is removed and who is permitted to remove them.
  • Administrator roles set deliberately at handover, so a site manager sees one building and nobody inherits global rights by accident.

Verkada cloud access control, in plain terms

Verkada access control runs the door system from a browser rather than from a server in a closet. The door controller still sits at the opening and still needs power, a lock and a reader — what moves to the cloud is the software, the user list, the audit trail and the updates. There is no access management server to patch, back up, or discover has quietly stopped working.

For a multi-site operator that is the whole argument. One login covers every building, a manager sees only their own site, and a person who leaves is removed once rather than once per location.

Credential management: badges, mobile and one-time passes

Credential management is where most access systems quietly fail, and it is worth being specific about what Verkada does here.

  • Mobile credentials — the badge lives on the phone. Nothing to print, nothing to courier to another site, and revocation is immediate rather than "when we find the card".
  • Physical cards and fobs — still supported, and still the right answer for staff who do not carry a phone on shift or work in areas where they cannot.
  • Guest and contractor passes — time-limited access issued for a window and expiring on its own, which is the fix for the contractor credential nobody remembers to cancel.
  • Directory sync — tie the user list to your identity provider so a leaver removed in HR is removed at the door, without a second process anyone has to remember.

The audit trail matters as much as the credential. Every grant, denial and door-held event is recorded against a person and a time, which is what an investigation or a compliance review actually needs.

It fits less well where a healthy on-premise system already exists with years of life in it, or where a site genuinely cannot accept cloud management for policy reasons.
