Before you order a DoorKing entry system, go and walk the gate
The operator is the last thing to choose, not the first. DoorKing builds slide, swing and barrier gate operators alongside telephone entry, credential readers and vehicle detection, and any of them can be made to work. What decides whether the installation is safe, legal and durable is the condition of the gate itself and the site around it. Every question below is answered by standing at the opening with a tape measure, not by reading a spec sheet.
Classify the entrance first
UL 325 sorts vehicular gate operators into four usage classes, and the class governs which operator may be installed. Class I is residential, up to four single-family dwellings. Class II is commercial or general access, which covers apartment communities, hotels, retail and parking serving the public. Class III is industrial and limited access, the loading yard or plant gate not used by the public. Class IV is restricted access, a guarded location where only qualified personnel pass. A distribution yard off I-16 behind the Savannah port and a gated residential entrance in the same county are not the same class, and an operator rated for one is not a substitute for the other.
Then judge the gate as a machine
ASTM F2200 governs how the gate itself is built: guarded pinch points, limited openings in the infill, covered rollers, positive stops, and a leaf that cannot come off its track and fall. A powered gate that does not meet it should not be automated until it does, and that correction belongs in the budget before the operator is quoted. While you are there, record the leaf weight and length, the condition of the track, wheels, hinge posts and stops, whether the posts are plumb, the slope across the travel, and how much solid infill the gate carries. A solid privacy gate on the coastal plain is a sail, and hurricane-season wind loading is a real design input rather than a footnote.
Map every entrapment zone
UL 325 requires two independent means of entrapment protection for each zone, in each direction of travel, and the secondary devices must be monitored so a failed sensor stops the gate rather than being quietly ignored. That is the inherent sensing built into the operator plus non-contact photoelectric sensors, contact edges, or a combination. Walk the opening and write down every place a person or vehicle can be caught: the closing edge, the opening or reveal side of a slide gate, the space behind a swing leaf, the pinch at the post. Then assign a specific device to each one. This list, not the model number, is what makes a gate installation defensible.
Power, communications and Georgia weather
A gate operator is usually the most electrically exposed device on a property: an isolated enclosure at the end of a long run, in the open, in a state with frequent summer thunderstorms. Plan a dedicated branch circuit with a disconnect at the operator, a proper ground electrode at that location, and surge protection on the power and on every conductor entering the enclosure. Battery backup is not optional on an entrance that has to open during an outage. On the entry method, analog phone lines are increasingly hard to obtain and expensive to keep, so a cellular or network-connected entry system is generally the practical path. Confirm signal strength at the pedestal before that decision is locked, because the gate is often the worst-served point on the site.
The survey questions worth answering on paper
- Gate type, weight, length, duty cycle and expected daily cycles
- How residents, staff, visitors, deliveries and emergency responders each get in
- Fire department and emergency access, coordinated with the local authority
- Where loops go, and what each one does: exit, reversing, or presence
- Who will maintain the gate mechanics and test the safety devices after handover
Send photographs of the opening and the existing equipment and KSEDCO will tell you what the gate needs before the operator is selected. Call (888) 360-0035 or use the contact page.
