The decision that shapes a cloud camera project is not which brand goes on the pole. It is how much upload bandwidth the building actually has, and what the system does during the hours that bandwidth is gone. Camera count, resolution, retention and appliance sizing all fall out of those two answers, so we settle them first.
Measure the circuit before counting cameras
Cloud cameras push video off site, and business internet is usually sold asymmetrically: a large download figure and a much smaller upload figure. Upload is the number that carries surveillance. A leased suite off Cumberland Parkway sharing a landlord-controlled riser and a distribution building on I-16 behind the Savannah port are different projects even when the camera count matches. We test sustained upstream during working hours rather than overnight, then size streams against that measurement instead of a brochure figure.
Why Georgia sites usually land on a hybrid design
Sending every frame off site in real time is realistic only where there is fiber to spare. The common answer keeps a recorder on premises running at full rate and sends the cloud what an operator needs: event clips, analytic detections, and full-quality video on request. Either way, the local recorder is what keeps the archive whole when the circuit does not cooperate, and it is the piece most often left out of a low bid.
Storms belong in the specification
Georgia’s summer thunderstorm pattern produces short utility interruptions and brief carrier drops through most of the season, and the coastal plain adds hurricane exposure on top of that. Three questions decide whether any of it costs you footage:
- Does the camera or appliance buffer when the uplink drops, and for how many hours?
- Does it backfill the gap automatically once the link returns, or is that stretch simply missing?
- What is actually on battery? A UPS protecting the recorder but not the PoE switch, the router or the fiber terminal keeps a recorder alive with nothing to record.
Surge protection and a verified ground at the camera end matter just as much on pole and rooftop runs, where a nearby strike finds the longest copper on the property.
Questions worth asking before signing a subscription
- Who owns the recorded video, and how is it exported in bulk if you change providers?
- What is billed, precisely: days of retention, per camera, at what resolution and frame rate?
- Does adding one camera later add a license, an appliance, or both?
- Do the cameras keep recording locally if a subscription lapses, or do they stop?
- How is an administrator account recovered, and is multi-factor authentication available?
- Who at the provider can view your video, and what gets logged when they do?
Long-term archives are a separate line item. Pushing selected incident video to object storage such as Amazon S3 costs far less than paying platform retention rates for everything, but only if the export path is defined while the system is being built.
Where the model earns its place
Cloud video suits organizations with more locations than technical staff: tenant suites around Perimeter, self-storage and light industrial along I-75 through Macon, production stages where crews rotate weekly and account cleanup would otherwise never happen. It suits sites where nobody wants a recorder in an unlocked closet. It is a poor fit where the upstream is thin and the retention requirement is long, and we will say so during the survey rather than after the invoice.
