Choosing a Credential Technology You Will Live With for a Decade
Panels get replaced. Software gets migrated. Credentials outlast both, because changing them means touching every reader, reissuing every badge and retraining everyone who carries one. That is why the credential decision, not the reader model, is the one worth slowing down for.
Three tiers, and what actually separates them
Legacy 125 kHz proximity cards and fobs transmit a fixed number with no cryptography. Anything that can hear that number can repeat it, and duplicating hardware is inexpensive and widely sold. They read fast and they still work, and replacing them is a project in itself, which is why so many sites still run them.
Smart cards at 13.56 MHz perform mutual authentication before releasing data. The security comes from key management rather than from the frequency: a card issued on default or shared factory keys gives away most of the advantage. Ask how keys are held, who else holds them, and what happens when a reader is pried off a wall.
Mobile credentials move the badge onto a phone over Bluetooth or NFC. Issuance and same-day revocation get faster, and the cost model shifts from a card price to a subscription. They fit populations that turn over quickly and already carry a company phone. They fit gloved dock workers and contractors sharing one device considerably less well.
Biometrics belong at specific doors, not everywhere
Fingerprint and face readers remove the lent-badge problem, which matters at a cash room, a server cage or an evidence room. They also add enrollment work, template storage your written policy has to account for, and a throughput limit at doors people reach in bunches. Put them where the risk justifies the friction, and pair them with a card or PIN so a failed read is not a lockout.
The wiring decision that ages fastest
Wiegand has no supervision and no encryption between reader and panel, so a device spliced into that run can capture or replay card numbers without the system noticing. OSDP with Secure Channel encrypts the link and reports reader tamper and offline status. If a site is pulling new cable anyway, standardizing on OSDP costs almost nothing now and removes a whole category of future rework.
Georgia conditions that reach the reader
Exterior readers here spend the summer in humidity that condenses inside enclosures every time a cool surface meets warm air. Gasketing, drip loops and a housing rated for the actual exposure do more for reliability than anything on the feature list. On the coastal plain around Savannah, add salt and expect faster corrosion at connectors, screws and mounting plates.
Thunderstorm season is the other reliability tax. Reader runs that leave a building for a gate pedestal, a detached dock office or a trailer yard need surge protection at both ends and a grounding scheme that terminates somewhere real. Sites that skip it replace readers every storm season.
Populations that change the specification
Film and television production stages around metro Atlanta cycle crews project by project, so issuance speed and same-day revocation matter more than door count. Student housing in Athens turns over on an academic calendar, in a compressed window, with a lost-badge rate the card budget has to anticipate. Tenant suites in Cumberland and Perimeter towers usually sit behind a base-building system, so the credential choice is constrained by whatever the lobby turnstiles and elevator readers already accept.

The useful question is not the brand on the faceplate but which credential that reader will still be reading in eight years.
