Sizing a Milestone XProtect System Before You Pick a Camera
Most Milestone projects go wrong in the same place. The camera count gets decided first and the recording architecture gets decided last. Reverse that order. On XProtect, the edition, the server layout and the storage plan all follow from three numbers: how long footage has to survive, how many streams have to be written at once, and how many people have to watch at the same time. Retention drives the build, not resolution
A tenant fit-out in a Cumberland or Perimeter tower keeping two weeks of footage is a different machine from a Savannah distribution yard that has to produce a clean export ninety days after a container claim. Ask the people who will request video how far back they will ask. Logistics operators behind the port, film and television production stages around metro Atlanta, and data center corridor tenants frequently answer in months rather than days, and that answer sets disk capacity, RAID rebuild time and the width of the write path long before it sets a camera model.
Where the edition line actually falls
XProtect runs from the small editions up through Professional+, Expert and Corporate. The useful question is not which edition is best but which capability you need on day one. Multiple recording servers, failover recording, evidence lock and the more rigorous export handling sit at the upper tiers. Milestone Interconnect and Milestone Federated Architecture earn their keep when a company runs Atlanta, Macon and Augusta sites that each need local recording but central review. If a site will never federate, money spent on federation should have gone into storage instead.
What a Georgia summer does to an unprotected recorder
Thunderstorm season is the real test. A recording server that drops in the middle of the afternoon loses exactly the footage somebody will ask for that evening. Failover recording servers cover a server fault; they do not cover a rack that lost power. Size the UPS for a graceful shutdown of the whole recording chain, including the switches feeding cameras and the edge switches sitting in IDF closets. Put surge protection and a proper ground on every camera run that leaves the building shell, and specify enclosures for standing humidity rather than for rainfall alone.
Version discipline is a scheduling problem
Device Packs, camera firmware and the XProtect version have to move together. A camera model bought eighteen months after the original install may need a newer Device Pack than the recorder is running, and that upgrade cascades out to the Smart Client version on every workstation. Plan the sequence, take a configuration backup, and establish a documented rollback point before touching a production system. Do it during a window when nobody needs the cameras, which on a production stage or a shipping dock is a narrower window than it sounds.
What you should hold at handover
- A camera schedule tied to real room and door names, not to IP addresses.
- Retention actually achieved per camera group, measured on the finished system rather than estimated from a calculator.
- Named administrator accounts mapped to roles, and a written record of who holds the highest privilege.
- An export procedure your own staff has performed once, with a signed export produced during acceptance.
- Firmware, Device Pack and XProtect versions recorded exactly as they were left.
