Commercial Data Cabling: Decide the Media Before Anything Gets Pulled

Most cabling problems are decided in the first hour of design and paid for over the next ten years. Three choices carry nearly all of the risk: what category of copper goes to each outlet, how much power those runs will be asked to carry, and who actually controls the building you are working in. Everything else is craft.

Cat6 or Cat6A is a per-outlet decision, not a per-building one

Cat6 supports 10GBASE-T only over reduced distance and is sensitive to alien crosstalk from the runs bundled beside it. Cat6A supports it across the full 100 meter channel. That does not mean every outlet needs Cat6A, and specifying it everywhere is a good way to spend money that should have gone into pathway.

  • Wireless access points and floor switch uplinks: Cat6A, because the radio will be replaced two or three times before the cable is
  • Desk phones, badge readers, thermostats and signage: Cat6 is honest and costs less
  • Anything past a 100 meter channel, or crossing between buildings: fiber, with no exception worth arguing about
  • OM4 for in-building backbone; single-mode where distance or a future rate increase is genuinely in question

Power over Ethernet turned cabling into a thermal problem

802.3bt puts as much as 90 watts on a link. Bundle fifty of those together and the cables in the center of the bundle run measurably hotter than the ones on the outside. Insertion loss rises with temperature, and a link that certified comfortably in March can fail in July without anything having been touched.

That is not an academic concern in Georgia. An unconditioned plenum above a Cumberland office suite, or the ceiling of a distribution building off I-16, can sit above 100 degrees in midsummer before a single watt of PoE is added. Smaller bundles, larger conductor gauge and cable kept out of thermal insulation are the inexpensive fixes. Rework after the fact is not.

Tenant improvement work around Cumberland, Perimeter, Midtown and Buckhead is governed by the building standard before it is governed by your drawings. Plenum ratings, firestop details, riser access, permission to core drill and freight elevator hours are all someone else’s decision. The demarc extension from the building point of entry into the suite, and the carrier coordination behind it, is usually the longest item on the schedule. Settle the riser and the carrier first; the cable is the easy part.

Distribution buildings are a different geometry entirely

The warehouse space that has grown behind the Port of Savannah along I-16 and I-95, and the older I-75 corridor through Macon, is built at 36 to 40 feet clear. An access point mounted flat to the deck is aiming at the top of the racking, not at the scanner in the pick aisle forty feet below it.

  • Drop poles or rack-mounted placement at a working height, aimed down the aisle rather than straight at the floor
  • Conduit or armored cable for the first ten feet of any run a forklift can reach
  • Coverage validated with racking loaded, not on an empty slab where everything looks fine

The test results are the deliverable

Certify every link as a permanent link and hand over the saved result files rather than a summary page. Label both ends to one consistent scheme and record that scheme somewhere durable. Keep as-builts current through the punch list instead of reconstructing them afterward. Manufacturer system warranties are issued against submitted test data and an approved component list, so if the results were never captured, that option is gone and cannot be recovered later.
